Community seeks proposals for new Comprehensive Plan

Seneca County, Tiffin, Fostoria to collaborate on community plan

TIFFIN, OHIO – September 27, 2017 – The Seneca Regional Planning Commission released a request for proposals for a new county-wide Comprehensive Plan, to include Tiffin and Fostoria. The request includes a combined plan for the three entities, as well as individual plans, each with separate cost estimates, and a twenty-year horizon. Proposals will be accepted until Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 3 p.m.

Seneca County Commission President Mike Kerschner said the plan is yet another way for the county to partner with the cities on a common cause. “This plan will continue the climate of collaboration between the different entities within Seneca County, including the successful merger of the Fostoria and Tiffin courts, as well as the execution of the Justice Center,” he said.

The Comprehensive Plan will address long-range policy for land use planning, transportation, economic development, housing, public facilities, historic, natural and cultural resources, agricultural preservation, intergovernmental cooperation, budget preparation, and capital improvement planning and other facets of community life deemed important by the chosen consultant and agreed to by the participating entities.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz is looking forward to a new plan and direction for the city. “Our current plan was created in 1994 and is, at this point, extremely outdated. I am excited to see what the consultants will come up with for the community’s development,” he said.

Work is anticipated to begin in 2018 with an 18- to 24-month timeframe, if a firm is selected and funding allocated. The finished product should be ready for adoption by the participating legislative bodies at public hearings by late 2019.

FOSTORIA, OHIO – Reineke Ford, Inc. of Fostoria celebrates 50 years of partnership with Ford Motor Company. On August 24, 1967, Mr. William F. Reineke, Sr. was welcomed into the Ford Motor Company in Fostoria, and Reineke Ford has been selling new Ford vehicles since that date.

William F. Reineke, Sr., took a great risk with the support of his wife, Corrine, and moved his very young family from Toledo, to Fostoria, to fulfill a dream of owning an auto dealership. He moved there in 1960 and first acquired a Buick Oldsmobile franchise. In 1967, he acquired the Ford franchise from Willis B. Hakes, who was an original dealer approved by Henry Ford in 1913.

“Bill” Reineke, Sr. worked very hard at pursuing the American Dream and raising 10 children in Fostoria. He was involved in many organizations and led by example.

Thomas Reineke, who is now the dealer principle and has been working at this dealership in various positions for the past 40 years, starting with the wash rack, service, parts, sales and today, management as President. Tom Reineke and wife, Stacey, are proud to have raised their children, Laura and Alex, through Reineke Ford’s community involvement in Fostoria.

Other Reineke Family members are involved in the management of Reineke Family Dealerships., including the next generation, who are pursing the example of the founder.

Today, Reineke Family Dealerships has Ford & Lincoln franchises located in Tiffin (Reineke’s Tiffin Ford Lincoln), Findlay (Reineke Ford Lincoln of Findlay), and Lima (Reineke Ford Lincoln of Lima) along with Reineke Ford, in Fostoria.  “Our long standing relationship defines why Ford continues to be our flagship brand,” said Tom Reineke, President, “from stated values to quality products we’re proud to be a part of the Ford family.”

Reineke Family Dealerships, founded in 1960 by William F. Fostoria #10 most affordable place to live in Ohio

smartasset2_1000x563_2-4-2014Fostoria was recently ranked the number 10 most affordable place to live in Ohio, according to a study by SmartAsset, a financial calculation firm.

Every year, researchers consider closing costs, real estate taxes, homeowners insurance and mortgage rates over five years among cities with a population of more than 5,000, then see how those figures fit with the communities’ median household income.

This year, Northwest Ohio claimed three of the top 10 slots with Fostoria in the number 10 spot, joining Delphos (#3) and Northwood (#7). Check out the complete SmartAsset study here.

Fostoria is not the only affordable place to live in Seneca County. In 2014, the cost of living in Tiffin was about 20% below the national average, and in 2016 it was listed one of the 20 Most Affordable College Towns.

Seneca County in Top 10 for economic development in US

TIFFIN, OHIO – March 2, 2017 – The Seneca Industrial & Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) announced today that Seneca County has again placed in the top ten nationally on Site Selection Magazine’s rankings for large, private economic development projects – placing tenth out of the 576 micropolitans in the US for the honor. Site Selection has been annually ranking states and cities since 1978.

This is the sixth year in a row that the Tiffin micropolitan area has ranked in the top 100 nationally and the fifth year for ranking in the top ten percent. Qualifying projects must involve a capital investment of at least $1 million, create at least 20 new jobs, or add at least 20,000 sq. ft. of new floor area. Six Seneca County projects qualified for Site Selection, including expansions at Arnold Machine, Church and Dwight, Owens Corning, Tiffin Metal Products, Poet Energy, and Mennel Milling.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz cited partnership as a driver of economic development for the county. “Having the city, county and economic development organizations in sync plays a key role in keeping us at the top of development, expansion, investment and employment,” he said. Fostoria Mayor Eric Keckler agreed, “We are pleased with the economic development progress we see going on in Fostoria and in Seneca County. This is a great honor.” Seneca County Commission President Mike Kerschner agreed: “Throughout the county we are seeing record growth in all sectors. The climate for all business and overall quality of life improves with each addition.”

This year, Ohio ranked as the number two state for development projects and the entire Northwest Ohio region posted strong numbers, with Findlay taking the number one micropolitan slot, Defiance tying with Seneca County for tenth, and Toledo ranking seventh in its division. “Northwest Ohio has built incredible momentum over the past few years,” said Dean Monske, President & CEO of the Regional Growth Partnership in Toledo. “National recognition is a testament to the fact that the region is an excellent area to locate or expand a business and to the hard work of our partners in economic development as well as public officials.”

Seneca County Land Bank awarded over $4 million

The Seneca County Land bank received over $4 million in Neighborhood Initiative Program funds to demolish blighted houses in the county – $4,025,000 to be exact.  Seneca County was one of the highest funded counties which speaks highly to the quality of the project, the application and the partners involved.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Seneca County,” Seneca County Treasurer Damon Alt said.  “This kind of money will allow us to eliminate blighted houses and increase overall property values in area neighborhoods.”

Currently, the Land Bank has identified 161 properties throughout the county for potential demolition with this award.  This allocation was made possible because of the large number of partners, including (but not limited to) the Seneca County Commissioners, the Seneca County Treasurer’s Office, the Seneca County Prosecutor’s Office, the City of Tiffin, the City of Fostoria, and the Fostoria Economic Development Corporation office.

“For a community like Fostoria, this kind of money will have a tremendous impact,” said Renee Smith, President of the Fostoria Economic Development Corporation.  “Citizens will see the results of this funding and it will benefit the entire county.”

Seneca County formed the Land Bank in November of 2015 by resolution of the Seneca County Commissioners.  A Land Bank is a tool used to strategically acquire properties, return them to productive use, reduce blight, increase property values, and improve the quality of life for county residents.  The formation of the Land Bank demonstrated our elected official’s commitment to healthy, sustainable community redevelopment within Seneca County.

The Seneca County Land Bank will begin acquiring the identified properties and demolition activity will then follow.  This will be an ongoing process but will directly impact property values, safety and even community pride.

 

Mennel Milling Company to expand

MennelThe Mennel Milling Company, headquartered in Fostoria, has announced plans to purchase General Mills’ Martel Bakery Mix and Packaging plant, expanding their product line into the bakery mix business. The sale is expected to be finalized Nov. 1.

“With this acquisition we will no longer be constrained to selling flour as an ingredient into baked goods or bakery mix,” President D. Ford Mennel said in a press release. “We will now be able to offer a full line of bakery mix products to our big box, commercial, wholesale and bakery customers and marketplaces.”

This expansion is the latest in a series of expansions over the past year. In January, the company announced plans to invest $40-50 million to revitalize their facility. The 2020 Plan is a 10-year project to improve the Fostoria plant by consolidating business operations into one location and expanding grain storage capabilities.

MennelLast year, Mennel invested over $8 million in local projects, several of which are ongoing. They installed a new transformer, replaced four grain bins (all of which were more than 100 years old), and installed a new flour-drying system and a new extrusion plant. They are also preparing to move to their new corporate headquarters in August and plan to add four more storage bins, doubling their previous capacity.

The Mennel Milling Company has been milling wheat into flour since 1886. Their corporate headquarters are located in Fostoria, Ohio, with five flour mills, seven elevators and three trucking companies located across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Virginia. Mennel has been a supplier to the Martel, Ohio facility for over 40 years.

 

Local leaders launch INSIGHT blitz

Outreach campaign aims to connect with 1,000 businesses

INSIGHT logoTIFFIN, OHIO – June 24, 2016 – The INSIGHT Consortium, a group of local and regional nonprofit business service providers, announced today that they are starting an intensive outreach effort to connect Tiffin, Fostoria, and Seneca County businesses with resources to help them grow and expand. The first phase of the effort is scheduled to run through the end of 2017.

Established at the end of 2014, the INSIGHT Consortium is made up of the Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. (SIEDC), the Fostoria Economic Development Corp. (FEDC), the Seneca County Department of Job & Family Services, Terra State Community College, Sentinel Career Center, the Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce of Visitors Services, Regional Growth Partnership, the Northwest Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and the Seneca Regional Planning Commission. The mission of the group is to work together to reach more businesses with more resources, and they meet monthly.

The program’s name comes from the main types of resources it seeks to provide (Information, New Business, Space, Investment, Government, Hiring, Training), and the group has identified more than 200 free or subsidized financing, grant, tax credit, consulting and other services that are available. What they want to do is make more Seneca County companies aware of those resources and help them take advantage of them.

The 2016-17 outreach blitz will be conducted by a team of more than 25 individuals, including the INSIGHT consortium members, as well as members of the Tiffin Downtown Main Street program, professional outreach firm COACT Associates, as well as a university intern. All information gathered will remain confidential within the respective agencies. Aggregate data and trends will be used for program development, planning, and policy.

Carol Owen Kern, Business Services Liaison with the Seneca County Department of Job & Family Services and a founding member of the consortium, is glad to see the group move forward with the blitz: “Seneca County JFS and Ohio Means Jobs have dedicated significant resources to helping companies recruit the workers they need, and this will help us all reach more businesses with our services.”

Beth Hannam, Manager of Business and Industry Training with Terra State Community College, likes the aggressive approach, “All of us on the INSIGHT team are excited about meeting the needs of more and more companies in Seneca County and about connecting businesses with hundreds of resources that are available. It’s truly win-win,” Beth Hannam said.

John Detwiler, President of the Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Services, is pleased with the INSIGHT blitz: “Supporting our local businesses is our first priority, and this helps us reach more of them. It complements and supports the work we’ve been doing through the Industrial Management and Safety Councils, our partnership with the Small Business Development Center, our networking and business events, and member discounts.”

Fostoria Economic Development Corporation President Renee Smith expressed similar support: “Business retention and expansion is a key focus of ours, as most of the new jobs and investment comes from existing companies. INSIGHT provides me and Fostoria area companies better access to more resources, which is really beneficial.”

SIEDC President & CEO David Zak also thanked people for their support: “I appreciate the entire INSIGHT consortium for their passion for local businesses and support of this program. I also want to thank the Regional Growth Partnership for providing additional team members through their relationship with COACT, the City of Tiffin for supplying an intern, and AEP supporting us the initiative through Local Economic Assistance Program (LEAP) grant.”

Superior Credit Union named 7th best-performing credit union in US

superior greenS&P Global Market Intelligence recently released its ranking of the 50 best-performing credit unions of 2015, naming Superior Credit Union number seven in the nation, the only Ohio-based credit union to make the list.

The rankings were decided using five core financial performance metrics: member growth, net charge offs as a percentage of average loans, efficiency ratio, asset quality, and market growth. The credit union is ranked in impressive company, as only one other credit union in the top ten had assets of less than $2 billion. Up from $572 million at year end, Superior’s current asset size is $590 million.

“Superior is proud to be recognized as one of the safest and best performing credit unions in the country,” said Phil Buell, CEO. “To be recognized nationally, is a testament to our volunteers, employees, and members, who collaboratively provide our community with consumer-friendly financial solutions.”

Superior acquired the Southeast Financial Credit Union branches in Fostoria and Tiffin at he beginning of 2016, expanding their customer base by 7,000 members and $60 million in deposits.
