High school post-grad program receives $10,000 AT&T contribution

TIFFIN, OHIO – August 6, 2018 – The AT&T Foundation presented a $10,000 contribution on Monday to the Year Thirteen, a program providing high school seniors with mentoring and resources to ensure high school success and help them attain post-secondary career goals. The contribution will help fund a part-time director position for the program, which will launch this fall with the Tiffin Columbian High School graduating class of 2019.

Education and student success are a cornerstone of AT&T’s community initiatives. Since 2012, AT&T employees have provided more than 1.6 million hours of mentoring to students, and its AT&T Aspire initiative has committed more than $400 million since 2008 to promote student success in school and beyond. “We are very proud to support this new program for students in Tiffin,” said Nicolette Jaworski, AT&T’s Director of External Affairs for Cleveland and Northwest Ohio. “It aligns perfectly with our desire to see more students be successful.”

The program was modeled after the successful Presidential Pathways initiative started at Marion City Schools under the current superintendent of Tiffin City Schools, Gary Barber. “Much like the Presidential Pathways program, the Year Thirteen will allow us to build and leverage relationships within the community, keep our talent local, and focus on workforce development by putting in place a dynamic system aligned with our community’s needs,” he said. “It will also be a measuring stick for our school system.”

The program focuses on eight key areas designed to promote student success leading up to and following graduation. These areas are: high school success, relationship building, career exploration, career success, job skills, work skills, and community engagement. All students in their senior year at Tiffin Columbian High School will be connected with a counselor that will check in with them periodically throughout the school year and the year following their graduation to promote the student’s success in university, vocational school, or entering the workforce.

Several organizations have partnered to participate in the program including: Tiffin City Schools, Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Centers, Tiffin University, Heidelberg University, Terra State Community College, Seneca County Department of Job & Family Services, Family, Adult & Children First Council, and the Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. (SIEDC).

SIEDC facilitated the grant process, citing a workforce gap as a key county-wide concern. “Unemployment is consistently low, and the biggest pipeline of talent is our educational system – K12 and higher education,” SIEDC President and CEO David Zak said. “Improving college completion and preparing high school students for successful careers is, therefore, a top priority, as the workforce needs are at all skill and education levels.”

TU and TCS partner to pave student success

Tiffin University and Tiffin City Schools will partner in the Graduate Pathway to Success program, leading students to high-demand, high-quality employment opportunities upon graduation.

The partnership enables students to take college courses that will lead to the completion of 36 to 48 college credits. High-demand, high-quality fields including computer information systems software development, cyber-defense, supply chain management, and general education will be offered. Through a structured pathway, students will take courses starting their freshman year of high school and continue in their intended major through their senior year.

Students and families who participate can save $28,000 to $36,000 in college tuition.

Tiffin City Schools will advise students in the career field of their choosing. According to TCS Superintendent Gary Barber, students need the same core of academic skills whether they enroll in a traditional two-or four-year institution, enter a post-secondary technical program or apprenticeship, go directly into the military, or enter into the workforce following graduation.

“These pathways can become life-changers for our students and families,” Barber said. “Information Technology and Cyber-Defense will be two of the most sought after professions from 2016-2026. Giving our students access to these opportunities is our obligation. Having a great partner in Tiffin University can help make this a reality. This will be amazing.”

Tiffin University’s Provost Peter Holbrook says, “Our partnership with Tiffin Columbian High School provides creative pathways for students to earn college and high school credit at the same time. It allows students an exclusive opportunity to explore career options early while earning college credit in high school. This will reduce not only the time it takes to earn a degree, but also the cost of a college education. Joining forces with Tiffin City Schools to educate our young people will allow TU yet another opportunity to build the economic development and capacity of Seneca County, Ohio.”

First annual Local Job Fair set for March 10

job_fair_imageThe Tiffin City Schools Business Advisory Council is sponsoring a job fair on March 10 at Tiffin Columbian High School. The primary purpose of the fair is to assist high school seniors who don’t plan to attend post-secondary classes in the fall.  It is also an opportunity for those who do plan to continue their education to learn about employers who will have a need to hire individuals with the skills they will be learning.  In addition, this event will get 8th graders thinking about their futures and give them the opportunity to learn about local career opportunities and the skills and education they will need to succeed.

The agenda is as follows:

10-11am:  8th graders from the Tiffin Middle School will meet with the employers

11am-12pm:  Lunch

12pm: Columbian seniors will arrive

1-2:30pm:  High school seniors from 10 other area schools will be in attendance

2:30-4pm:  Heidelberg and Tiffin University students have been invited and community residents will also be able to attend

There is space for approximately 50 tables and to date 30 Seneca County employers have responded to express an interest in attending.  To reserve a table, contact Pat Smith at Tiffin City Schools at 419-447-2515.

The Business Advisory Council is committee of the Tiffin City Board of Education and is comprised of people from industry, retail, public relations and journalism, medical fields, construction, government agencies along with parents and educators from elementary through higher education. Members look at the trends in the community, employment needs, and other issues to develop a plan that helps students become career ready.  Together they develop curriculum and/or study existing curriculum and activities that would teach necessary skills, career awareness, and economic knowledge while preparing the students to be good citizens. Meetings began in February 2016 and accomplishments include:

  • Implemented the REACH program for the TCS 4th-6th graders
  • Created student advisory committees at the middle school and high school
  • Have plans for Camp Invention this summer
  • Have plans to implement the STRIVE program for high school students at risk to not graduate (Coordinated with the Tiffin Rotary Club).

Seneca County Manufacturing Showcase success for students, local businesses

SCMS_logoThe first ever Seneca County Manufacturing Showcase was held at Heidelberg University today, giving 750 high-school students from 12 schools a chance to explore different skills valued in the workplace, specifically in manufacturing.

Fourteen local manufacturers led students through six different skill sets. The kids learned about team building, lean practices, employability, supply chain, machine trades and electrical trades/mechanical engineering/automation through interactive booths staffed by local companies.

Spearheading the coordination of the event was Carol Kern of the Seneca Department of Job and Family Services. Kern was pleased with the outcome of the event,”It’s exciting to see the students so engaged,” she said. “Hopefully they enjoyed the activities and learned a lot about career opportunities in Seneca County.”

Chase Eikenbary of Regional Growth Partnership/JobsOhio stressed the importance of introducing students to career skills early. “October is manufacturing month in Ohio, and it means great things for not only the manufacturing companies in the state but for the pipeline of our future workforce; our students,” she said. “Manufacturing careers are in high demand, provide excellent salaries, and allow employees to work in a high tech, growing industry. Students today were shown how they can become successful adults in their own communities with thriving career options.”

Fostoria Economic Development Corporation President Renee Smith agreed. “Manufacturing is a huge economic component of Seneca County, and it is the largest employer. It is essential that we continue to expose students to the career possibilities with our local companies,” she said.

Nearly 100 volunteers, including teachers from participating school districts, guided students through the planned activities. Tiffin City Schools Business Teacher Stacey Geiger said the event was rewarding as an educator. “It is exciting to see students engaged with Seneca County employers and using the knowledge that I incorporate in my classrooms,” she said.

Carl Pastorella, Human Resources Manager at Toledo Molding and Die, Inc. manning a booth centered around employability, was impressed with the students’ enthusiasm and knowledge. “The students we met got very involved in the activities we were presenting,” he said. “Our intent is to make sure they are prepared to get out and interview for jobs in future, and they already seem to be on the right track.”

Seneca County is also fortunate to have great relationships with state officials who are passionate about workforce development and how it pertains to our young people.

Summer food for kids

TSPL logoSeneca County Community Council has partnered with local organizations to provide food for local children throughout the summer. Tiffin YMCA, Tiffin’s Salvation Army, Community Task Force, the Allen Eiry Center, Tiffin-Seneca Public Library have been working together to continue the YMCA’s bagged food program already in place at Tiffin City Schools.

The YMCA has received grants from the Wal-Mart Foundation, the Marathon Foundation and the Tiffin Community Foundation’s White Fund to provide food weekly to children, ages 3 to 15 years old. Starting June 3 through September 3 five sites will hand out food every Friday at 3:30 to 5:00 pm; those sites include the YMCA, the Salvation Army, the Allen Eiry Center, Faith United Methodist Church and Tiffin-Seneca Public Library. The First Presbyterian Church will hand out food every Saturday at 9:00 to 10:30 am.

Other community members and organizations have stepped forward to provide additional resources during the thirteen-week period. Tiffin’s Altrusa Club will also be giving away books and the Library will host crafts or activities during some of the pickup dates.

Participants must be registered to receive food. Registration forms can be found at the Library, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, the Allen Eiry Center and Tiffin-Seneca United Way.

Manufacturers’ Bus Tour to be held Oct. 9

Ohio Means JobsOhioMeansJobs Seneca County is to host the first Seneca County Manufacturers’ Bus Tour this Friday, Oct. 9. The purpose of the bus tour is to expose superintendents, principals, and junior and senior high school guidance counselors to manufacturing work environments, career opportunities (from entry-level to advanced), and the possibilities for tuition reimbursement, with the goal of hosting a bus tour for students in the future. The tour will start at 7 a.m. at OhioMeansJobs Seneca County, and conclude at 3:45 p.m. Lunch will be provided, and prepared by the Sentinel Career Center culinary students.

14th anniversary of 9/11 to be observed at All Patriots Memorial

Tiffin- All Patriots MemorialIn memory of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, several events have been planned at the Tiffin Police and Fire All Patriots Memorial, located at the corner of N. Washington and Water Streets in Tiffin, for Friday, Sept. 11, the 14th anniversary of 9/11.

In honor of police officers and firefighters, the Tifffin Police and Fire Departments will gather at the memorial at 8:45 a.m. The ceremony will include the placement of a wreath at the memorial, and the raising of a flag donated by Tiffin native serving in the U.S. Air Force, Richie Martin. Martin’s crew flew the flag over Iraq on the last day of the Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn campaign on the last C130 plane out of the country. The flag is flown at half-mast over the site every Sept. 11.

Events for Tiffin City Schools and Calvert Catholic Schools students will be held throughout the day, followed by another community event at 7:30 p.m. At that time, the flag will once again be raised to full-mast.

Dedicated in September 2012, the All Patriots Memorial features a a 17.5′ long, 6,268 pound steel beam from the World Trade Center. The 16,000 square foot memorial also contains tributes to the Pentagon and Pennsylvania Flight 93. The names  of Tiffin police and fire forces who fell in the line of duty is carved on the granite base of the monument along with the words “Never Forget.”
