Seneca County Young Professionals reach 100 members

SCYP Logo (1)This month, the Seneca County Young Professionals (SCYP) reached 100 members for the first time! The group began the year with less than 40 members and through an increased focus on programming and added value to members, they have grown to 100 members and counting.

SCYP was started in 2014 as a way to connect new and emerging professionals with each other and the community. The organization was made possible by Pat DeMonte and the Tiffin-Seneca United Way, who saw a need for such a group in the community.

SCYP focuses on three core missions: Connect, Inspire and Grow.

Connect
The Connect committee plans social and networking events for the group. These include summer and winter sports leagues, exclusive events at new establishments throughout Seneca County, and two signature monthly events – Wednesdays After Work and Quick Connect Lunches.

Wednesdays After Work take place on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Each event takes place at a different location within Seneca County. For those who cannot make it to an after-hours event, SCYP also hosts a Quick Connect Lunch from 12-1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month. Both events are open to professionals of all ages. Inspire
Young professionals place importance on community involvement and social responsibility. The Inspire committee organizes volunteer efforts for the organization. While anyone may reach out to the young professionals for assistance with events, they have several organized events each year for members to get out and volunteer. Past events have included Painting for a Purpose, proceeds benefiting the United Way CPR training, installing smoke detectors in homes in Fostoria, serving food for the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure, assisting at the Bash on The Bay concert, and participating in the United Way Day of Caring.

Grow
The Grow committee focuses on professional and personal development for members. Previous events have included Wellness at the Y, from which the group’s YMCA membership discount stems, a Financial Literacy round table, Networking 101, and a presentation about maintaining a work-life balance, to name a few.

In addition to these events, members are also eligible for a professional development scholarship. Members can apply for up to $500 to cover costs, including travel and registration, for a professional development event or training not covered by their employer.

Allen Eiry Center helps seniors stay active

allen eiryThe Allen Eiry Senior Center is a social organization that provides and promotes activities for those in and around the Seneca County community. Programs aim to benefit the health, educational, social and recreational interest of the community. It is a private, non-protif organization funded by Tiffin-Seneca United Way, The Columbus Foundation, membership dues, grants, special events, and friends of the organization. Named for Allen Eiry, the center honours his support in assisting seniors in the community.

Since 1983, the Allen Eiry Fund has benefited the citizens of Seneca County to honour the wishes of Mr. Eiry. A native of Seneca County, Mr. Eiry operated an automotive dealership in Green Springs, Ohio for more than 40 years.  A member of the Seneca County Farm Bureau and the Green Springs Masonic Lodge, Mr. Eiry’s ties to the community long succeeded him, having provided over $2.8 million to senior citizens.

Membership forms can be found online or at the center. Dues are $25 per person, paid annually from January through December. Members can participate in scheduled activities geared towards their interest, with a wide range of entertainment including bingo, potlucks, and live music. Seniors are encouraged to enjoy a full schedule of social activities, or meet friends at the center all on their own time. Health screenings and flu shots are regularly provided, allowing seniors to monitor their overall health. The Allen Eiry Center prides itself on its ability to provide activities that encourage an active lifestyle in order to maintain a happy and fulfilled lives.

Downtown Tiffin businesses offer “Trick or Treat”

Downtown Trick or TreatA new Tiffin Halloween event, the 1st Annual Downtown Trick or Treat is slated for Friday, Oct. 30 from 3:30-5 p.m. More than 60 businesses, organizations and offices all over downtown Tiffin will be opening their doors to provide candy to children. Afterward, Tom Rodgers Flowers will have cider and donuts for adult trick or treaters from 5-6 p.m.

Organizer Yolanda Gonzales got the idea from a similar event in Owensboro, KY, where she used to live. “It was a win for the community, businesses got positive exposure, kids got candy, caretakers learned more about their community and it was daylight. I found myself entering business that I would not normally go into – it was a wonderful way to meet businesses in town – also meet the people who own the businesses and  people who work there,” she said. “So, I contacted Mr. Montz with the idea and he said it was a great idea – but he needed someone to coordinate it.  I volunteered.”

Gonzales was greeted with excitement and enthusiastic responses from downtown businesses and hopes to make this an annual event. “The owners of Cabin Creations said they used to do this downtown – but no one else remembers.  I hope this becomes a new tradition for Tiffin.”

Around the Town event welcomes back university students

around the townNearly 1,000 Heidelberg and Tiffin University students will have an opportunity to see what more than 60 Tiffin businesses and organizations are all about at a Welcome Back Students/Around the Town Event this Saturday, Aug. 22 from 3 – 5 p.m. on the courthouse green space.

Around the Town is one of the signature events of the Downtown Strategic Plan, and this is the first year that the event will be held downtown and combine both universities.

WTSC Seneca County Radio will be live broadcasting from the event, playing music and interviewing guests. Several restaurants will be providing free samples, shops and restaurants will hand out coupons and menus, non-profits will provide students with information about how to get involved in their organizations and students can check out local services.

SIEDC Downtown Development Specialist Bryce Riggs is a Heidelberg student the lead organizer of the event. “As a student and lifelong Tiffin resident, I am aware of the opportunities in the community, but the majority of new students don’t know what’s out there or where they can go. Tiffin has so much to offer! I would like other students to know what’s out there, so they can get involved in the local organizations and visit our restaurants and shops,” Riggs said.
